A new trailer for Air Bud Returns shows the basketball star dog in a new game full of misfits. In the trailer, viewers get a look at the Golden Retriever lacing up his shoes once again to help a 14-year-old achieve his goal of becoming a basketball star.
The official synopsis reads, “After the passing of his father, Jacob and his mom move into his dad’s childhood home in Fernfield, where anything is possible. Jacob dreams of becoming a basketball star, which seems further away than ever, until he discovers a VHS marked “Air Bud.” Jacob has a miraculous chance meeting with a basketball-playing golden retriever, Buddy. The duo embarks on a journey of healing, unites a basketball team of misfits, and chases a championship as the new Timberwolves.”

The sports comedy-drama’s trailer opens with Buddy the Golden Retriever, who is played by the canine stars Charlie and Summer. He is seen running on the court in his two pairs of shoes while he is being introduced as “the player who defined a generation and became the original underdog.” The Basketball star then meets Jacob, who shoots hoops with him and eventually joins the latter’s team.
While there are protests against this, a referee reads the most important rule in the movie: “Ain’t no rules that say a dog can’t play basketball!” Buddy is seen scoring points on the court again and again, leaving his team and opponents baffled yet impressed. However, he eventually lets his friend Jacob shine as he makes a final shot right before the trailer ends.

The movie’s main cast also includes Aydin Artis, Tracy Ifeachor, Edwin Lee Gibson, Tyler Labine, Erik Gow, and Maxim Swinton.
Air Bud Returns is helmed by Robert Vince. He has worked on the other Air Bud movies in the franchise, including Air Buddies and Space Buddies. The upcoming movie will be one of the three movies in the entire franchise to have a theatrical release.
Air Bud Returns will be out in theaters on January 22, 2027.
