The Odyssey’s Jon Bernthal Broke Character in Hilarious Way After Weeks of Method Acting

Jon Bernthal plays a serious character in The Odyssey, but even the Punisher himself couldn’t help but break character in a hilarious moment. In the epic action fantasy film, Bernthal plays Menelaus, the King of Sparta.

Why did Jon Bernthal break character after weeks of method acting for The Odyssey?

While appearing on Hot Ones, Tom Holland told a funny story about Jon Bernthal’s commitment to method acting.

According to Holland, Bernthal committed hard to not talk for weeks at a time to focus on his character, even outside of the set. For that reason, Holland would have to order food for Bernthal when they went out to restaurants. It was during one of these dinners in Ireland that the actor finally broke character.

Holland recalled that Bernthal wanted a lemon for his salmon, but the server brought it over and put it directly into his water because she misheard Holland’s order. This prompted Bernthal to finally break his commitment to staying mute, responding, “Aight, f— it, I’m talking again!” Bernthal reiterated that everything Holland said was true.

Holland and Bernthal’s friendship and onscreen feud have been well known in Hollywood. The two actors first shared the screen in 2017’s Pilgrimage. Following that, they collaborated again on The Odyssey, and will be seen together in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which releases in July. In the latter, Bernthal’s Punisher will fill in Iron Man’s role as a mentor to the young Spider-Man.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey was released to critical acclaim last week and has grossed over $303 million at the worldwide box office. The film has already become Christopher Nolan’s biggest opening since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, and it continues to break records.

The Odyssey is now playing in theaters.
