‘Humiliatingly Bad’: Johnny Depp’s Ebenezer Movie Has Fans Laughing at Silly Tagline

Johnny Depp‘s new movie Ebenezer gets a “humiliatingly bad” tagline on a new poster. Users on X have criticized the tagline in hilarious ways. The movie is based on A Christmas Carol and is set to release this Thanksgiving.

What are A Christmas Carol fans saying about Ebenezer’s tagline?

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’s new poster featured the star Johnny Depp as the titular character. However, the tagline, “Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer,” has gained attention online.

Comments under the post stated, “Might be the most humiliatingly bad tagline I’ve ever heard,” while others added, “Okay, the tagline doesn’t really make sense, but it might be worth checking out.”

According to the users, the tagline doesn’t make sense because his full name is Ebenezer Scrooge.

Although the movie is billed as a ghost story based on Charles Dickens’ work, fans have theorized that it will actually be a prequel to the events in A Christmas Carol.

For instance, user @realJaredGilman posted, “Funny how the tagline accidentally implies this movie takes place before the events of A Christmas Carol.” @DKOSullivan questioned, “Is this going to be about how he made his fortune doing a bunch of shit that will doom him to eternal damnation?”

Other comments under the post suggested that the users find the prequel to Scrooge’s character pointless, stating, “I’m genuinely so befuddled by the tagline there, because if it really is committing to the prequel idea there… That just makes no sense for this character.”

Charles Dickens‘ famous novel has been adapted several times. Some of them include Scrooge (1951), Scrooged (1988), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), and A Christmas Carol (2009). However, the upcoming movie will focus on the character with a horror twist.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is helmed by Ti West. It also stars Andrea Riseborough, Ian McKellen, Tramell Tillman, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Arthur Conti, and Ellie Bamber.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is slated to release on November 13, 2026.
