The Punisher Is Filling Iron Man’s Role in Spider-Man 4 With a Big Twist

A new dynamic is about to reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer. Spider-Man’s upcoming chapter introduces an unexpected mentor figure filling in for Iron Man, though the relationship carries far more edge than fans might anticipate.

Tom Holland returns as the web-slinger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the highly anticipated fourth movie that lands in cinemas this July. Tony Stark first recruited Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War. And the father-son bond between the two defined much of the young hero’s journey. Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame left a void that subsequent films have struggled to address. Now, Marvel Studios appears ready to fill that gap with a radically different presence.

Frank Castle’s influence creates a volatile new Spider-Man partnership

Jon Bernthal has confirmed his Punisher will step into the mentor space once occupied by Iron Man, though the dynamic bears little resemblance to what came before. Speaking to ScreenRant, Bernthal was asked whether Frank Castle might serve as a “fun uncle” to Peter, mirroring Tony’s paternal role. His response is true to the character and the actor himself.

“Fun uncle? More like a derelict older brother,” Bernthal stated. “Look, we got to bring a lot of who we are to each other into this, which I think was great. There was a real openness to explore and play and find it, to make it authentic to who we are and how we feel about these characters.”

The actor acknowledged the tonal challenge of having The Punisher alongside Spider-Man. “I think it was a challenge with the tonality to bring a character like Frank into this world and I’m so appreciative to these guys,” he continued. “I believe that this is a Frank that you’d believe walking out of that set (One Last Kill) and onto this, and vice versa.”

Bernthal first embodied the brutal vigilante in Netflix’s Daredevil Season 2 before headlining two seasons of The Punisher. Following Marvel’s full canonization of the Netflix series, Frank returned in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 and later featured in the Disney+ special presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill. That project laid groundwork for his inclusion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Trailers released so far suggest significant time has passed before the film’s events begin. It indicates Frank and Holland’s heroes are already familiar with one another, hinting at an off-screen history that audiences will discover in theaters.
