It looks like Hugh Jackman and Ridley Scott’s upcoming Treasure Island movie is closer to release than expected. The film was announced earlier in June, with Jackman cast as Long John Silver, the one-legged pirate and cook. At the time, the film was passed on by 20th Century Studios because it was pursuing a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
What is the Treasure Island movie update?
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is now in negotiations with the filmmaker to land the movie. If it does, then the studio will likely pick it up for distribution sooner rather than later, unless the film enters a bidding war with other interested parties. Following this, fans can expect announcements regarding a release date, production start, casting, and more.
The screenplay is being written by Jack Thorne, whose credits include Adolescence, Enola Holmes 3, and The Hack. The upcoming film is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1883 adventure novel.
It won’t be the first time that Scott has worked with Sony on a major feature film. The filmmaker’s 2017 film All the Money in the World was produced by Sony’s TriStar Pictures banner. The company also produced and distributed Scott’s 2023 period film Napoleon through Columbia Pictures. If Treasure Island becomes Scott’s next project, it will mark the celebrated director’s 31st feature film.
Jackman has also worked with Sony Pictures on several films. The list includes 2018’s The Front Runner and this year’s The Sheep Detectives, the latter being distributed by Sony internationally. Most recently, Jackman made a surprising confession about his history with the original Treasure Island novel.
Ridley Scott’s next film, The Dog Stars, releases in theaters later this year on August 28, 2026. The Treasure Island film currently doesn’t have a release date. The film is being produced by Scott and Michael Pruss.
