Fans think the bearded Steve Rogers isn’t the Captain America we knew
Marvel fans on Instagram now suspect the Steve Rogers in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer is actually an evil Hydra variant. The theory gained traction after Instagram creator @thedylanseek posted a viral reel with over 57,000 likes. He said, “That is not Captain America. That is Captain freaking Hydra.” Several other accounts, including @smallscreenco and @thegeeksupreme, echoed similar theories.
The speculation stems from Rogers’ noticeably different appearance in the trailer. He sports a beard, longer hair, and dark civilian clothing instead of his iconic suit. Fans point out that earlier Doomsday footage showed Rogers in domestic bliss with his classic costume nearby. The trailer version, however, lacks any superhero outfit entirely.
In Marvel Comics, writer Nick Spencer introduced Hydra Cap in 2016’s Steve Rogers: Captain America #1. The Cosmic Cube rewrote reality and turned Rogers into a Hydra agent. That version also wielded Mjolnir after Odin’s worthiness enchantment was altered. The real Steve Rogers eventually reclaimed the hammer and defeated his Hydra counterpart.
The trailer shows Rogers summoning Mjolnir to prove his worthiness before a stunned Thor. Some fans believe the worthiness rules may have changed since the hammer was rebuilt. One fan noted that the Mjolnir in this film may not be the same one Cap lifted before. Another added that “the dark clothes give it away.”
If this Steve Rogers is indeed a Hydra variant, fans speculate Doctor Doom recruited him to infiltrate the Avengers. This would mirror a comics storyline where Kang turned Tony Stark into his secret agent.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th.
