Universal Pictures locked in a release date for the R-rated Snoop Dogg biopic as hip-hop films dominate the box office. The studio revealed when audiences can expect the definitive story of one of rap’s biggest icons to hit theaters.
Universal sets a 2027 release date for the R-rated Snoop biopic
Universal Pictures has scheduled the R-rated Snoop Dogg biopic, Snoop, for theatrical release on August 6, 2027. The film will debut in theaters alongside Disney’s The Bluey Movie and Black Bear’s Jason Statham Stole My Bike. Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss will portray the legendary rapper in the upcoming project.
Universal describes the movie as the “definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap” (via Variety). Song Sung Blue director Craig Brewer is helming the film. The project will incorporate music from Snoop’s vast catalogue, including hits like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Gin and Juice.”
Plot details remain unconfirmed at this stage. It is unclear whether the film will cover Snoop’s entire career or focus on one specific chapter. Snoop is a known face, working for decades as a rapper, actor, producer, DJ, and entrepreneur. He debuted in 1992 with Dr. Dre’s single “Deep Cover,” where he made an appearance.
The project marks the first release under Universal’s deal with Death Row Pictures. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Snoop Dogg, and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker will serve as producers. The movie was announced four years ago, back in 2022.
NBCUniversal Entertainment Chairman Donna Langley praised the rapper when the project was initially announced. “Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” Langley said. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
Notably, this comes after Michael Jackson’s biopic, titled Michael, had a thunderous success at the global box office. The movie went on to earn over $1 billion worldwide.
