The Odyssey‘s ending has viewers divided over a character’s fate. Christopher Nolan‘s movie ends with an epic climax. However, one character has left audiences confused because the film never reveals whether she survives.
Why is The Odyssey’s ending confusing Christopher Nolan fans?
Towards the ending of The Odyssey, a complete massacre breaks out. Odysseus traps the suitors and disloyal servants in a room and kills them one by one. One of the disloyal servants is Mia Goth‘s character, Melantho.
She serves Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and is the lover of Antinous (Robert Pattinson), one of the suitors. Penelope locks Melantho in the room where Odysseus is slaughtering the suitors for her disloyalty. However, those who have watched the movie are confused about her ambiguous death at the end of Nolan‘s blockbuster.
Viewers have taken to social media to question the ending for Goth’s character. For instance, @OpinionsAreGood on X posted, “Did Mia Goth die in The Odyssey and I missed it? Or do you think that’s on the cutting room floor somewhere, and they decided that Hathaway’s barb was enough comeuppance?”
User u/jcerne on Reddit added, “Does she get slaughtered in the end? Everything seemed set up for that outcome, but after Penelope locks her in the dining hall with the rest of the suitors, we don’t see what happens to her, do we? Did I miss it?”
Comments under the post speculate that she was killed by the King of Ithaca, while others suggest her ending wasn’t shown because she wasn’t an essential part of the scene. However, some fans speculate that her death may have been removed in a deleted scene, since the movie had to be under 3 hours.
That said, the original text of The Odyssey suggests that Melantho is executed by hanging. Although Nolan adapted Homer’s Odyssey by retelling the story from his own vision, the slaughtering of the suitors was an actual event in the original epic. After the massacre, the disloyal maidservants are ordered to clean the hall before being executed. Melantho is one of Penelope’s maidservants in the original epic, though her death is not described separately in detail.
