After the multiverse plot of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the next Spider-Man movie is taking a different approach. The upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to focus much more on the titular hero fighting crime on the streets of New York. Producer Amy Pascal recently explained why the filmmakers chose a smaller-scale story for the newest chapter in the iconic superhero’s big-screen journey.
Amy Pascal on why Spider-Man: Brand New Day is opposite of No Way Home
Spider-Man: Brand New Day may follow one of the biggest films in the franchise, but producer Amy Pascal says the new film is not trying to replicate what made Spider-Man: No Way Home such a large-scale event. Instead, the upcoming sequel has been developed with a very different objective in mind.
During an interview with Empire Magazine, Pascal explained that the filmmakers deliberately chose not to try to go bigger than the previous film. Rather than expanding the scope of the story, the team chose to focus on a smaller and more intimate approach for Tom Holland’s next chapter as Spider-Man. “After the last one, I think probably the tendency for filmmakers would be to try to go bigger. And we did the opposite. [‘Brand New Day’] is a more internal movie, and the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding,” she said.
Pascal’s remarks shed light on how Marvel and Sony have decided to plan the follow-up to one of the franchise’s biggest films. The film is set four years after the events of No Way Home and follows Peter as he continues protecting New York City from criminals while investigating a new threat. His mission takes an unexpected turn when his powers begin to evolve, granting him abilities he has never possessed before.
Tom Holland reprises his role as Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, and Mark Ruffalo. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to open in US theaters on July 31, 2026.
