Mortal Kombat Fans Get Good & Bad News on Possible Sub-Zero Movie

A Sub-Zero spin-off movie set as part of the 2020s Mortal Kombat films remains a possibility, according to star Joe Taslim. Fans of the franchise have speculated about the project since 2021’s Mortal Kombat, and those speculations have intensified with the release of 2026’s Mortal Kombat II. And now, Taslim has shared an update on it.

Joe Taslim discusses the prospects of Sub-Zero spin-off movie

The Indonesian actor, who portrays Sub-Zero / Bi-Ha / Noob Saibot in the new Mortal Kombat movies, gave a status update on the prospective spin-off about his character.

When asked during an interview with ScreenRant if there was any movement with the project, Joe Taslim replied, “There was a conversation about that. Yeah, but it depends. The franchise needs to survive first, and then I believe, if we can somehow… We haven’t heard anything, but if they want to go to the next one, there’s a chance that we have that story.”

Back in 2021, Taslim also expressed interest in doing a prequel revolving around his character. “The most interesting path, in my opinion, is to do a prequel,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It would be a story about Bi-Han and his training in the Lin Kuei. When he got abducted by the Lin Kuei, his parents were killed. So it would be the process of him and his brother becoming assassins.… We would get to see two future Sub-Zeros in one movie, and that would be intriguing.”

Moreover, in a separate interview that year, The Raid star told Variety that he had signed on for four movies. Notably, Deadline also reported back in October 2025 that New Line Cinema, a production company behind both movies, was considering a third entry in the franchise.

Mortal Kombat II has come out since then on May 8, 2026. It has drawn a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has made $126.8 million at the global box office in the month after its release (via Box Office Mojo).

As Joe Taslim indicates, if the movie franchise survives, a Sub-Zero solo film just might happen in the future.
