Yorgos Lanthimos Teases Next Movie with Emma Stone Following Poor Things

In a recent interview with Cineuropa, Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos confirmed that he has already completed filming his next project with frequent collaborator Emma Stone, whom he first worked with in 2018’s The Favourite. Shot by cinematographer Robbie Ryan, the untitled project takes place in his home country of Greece, which he teases will be “much simpler and very different in comparison to Poor Things because that story needed that particular style.”

Following Poor Things, Stone and Lanthimos are also reuniting in an upcoming anthology movie titled AND, which will also star Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, and Hong Chau. This project was filmed in 2022 in New Orleans. Currently, both of Lanthimos’ upcoming movies have not yet been release dates.

When is the release date of Poor Things?

The dark comedy had its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. Originally set for a September 8, 2023 release, the film was pushed back for three months and is now slated to arrive in theaters on December 8.

“The film is an incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter,” reads the synopsis. “Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”

Poor Things is directed by Lanthimos from a screenplay written by Tony McNamara, based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name which is a reimagination of the Frankenstein story. Joining Stone are Willem Dafoe as Godwin Baxter, Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn, Ramy Youssef as Max McCandless, Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley, Christopher Abbott as Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington, Margaret Qualley as Felicity, and Kathryn Hunter as Swiney.
