Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Gets 40th Anniversary Theatrical Release Date

Amidst all the big new reveals and news out of Star Wars Celebration 2023, Disney also announced that in celebration of its upcoming 40th anniversary, Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi is returning to theaters.

The return to theaters is the first time the film will officially be released again in 26 years. Beginning on April 28, Return of the Jedi will return to select theaters in the U.S., United Kingdom, and other regions for what Disney is calling “a limited time.” Alongside news of the release, artist Matt Ferguson also made a new poster to celebrate the 40th-anniversary screenings.

Screenings for Return of the Jedi’s 40th anniversary will take place between April 28-May 4, 2023 in the United States, and April 28-May 1, 2023 in the United Kingdom. Tickets will presumably go on sale soon, although no exact information is available yet.

Originally released in 1982, Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi is the third entry in the original Star Wars trilogy, and deals with the Rebel Alliance striving to take down a second Death Star built by the Galactic Empire, as well as Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker trying to save his father, Darth Vader, from the dark side of the force.

The film was a massive success after its release, and cemented the original Star Wars trilogy as one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies ever. In 2021, the film was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
