A surprisingly cool lightsaber addition in the latest Star Wars TV series emerged out of a “delightful misconception.” The upcoming anime series is set to debut next month.
What misconception resulted in Star Wars’ coolest lightsaber?
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, a new limited anime spin-off based on the TV series Star Wars: Visions is coming soon on Disney+ and Hulu. The series follows Lah Kara, a force-sensitive girl from the distant future, as she continues her search for her father.
Ahead of the series premiere, The Ninth Jedi creators, including Supervising Director Kenji Kamiyama, sat for an interview to talk more about the project in depth. During the interview, the team also revealed an interesting detail about how the lightsabers work in this series. In Ninth Jedi, a lightsaber’s color changes depending on the wielder’s alignment with the Force. This brand-new concept actually came out of a “delightful misconception.”
It was revealed that when Kamiyama watched the original Star Wars trilogy, he thought that lightsabers changed color automatically. Although he later realized his mistake, he decided to bring this idea into his own vision of Star Wars with The Ninth Jedi.
Speaking about the series, the creators revealed that Kara is highly inspired by the iconic Star Wars character Luke Skywalker. Director Shunsuke Tada said Kara’s journey mirrors Luke Skywalker’s. Like Luke, she begins as an inexperienced young hero before gradually growing into a legendary Jedi.
“Luke was also an unknown boy and not talented in the beginning, [and] he gradually becomes a true Jedi,” said Tada. “We tried not to make Kara look like a Master from the beginning, but she’s gradually growing. In the original story of The Ninth Jedi, Kara’s not trying to win over her father or somebody else. She’s trying to win over herself and grow as a person.”
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5, 2026.
