Players: Gina Rodriguez & Damon Wayans Jr. to Star in Netflix Rom-Com
Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy Players has added Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Damon Wayans Jr. (Happy Endings), who will attempt to fight romantic fate in the film (via Variety). Rodriguez will play Chicago sportswriter Mack and Wayans Jr. will star as her best friend, Adam. Rodriguez and Wayans Jr. will join Tom Ellis (Lucifer) in the feature.
Rodriguez’s recent credits also include Carmen Sandiego, Big Mouth, Miss Bala, Annihilation, and Deepwater Horizon. Her upcoming projects include the sci-fi thriller Awake, the comedies I Want You Back and Bobbie Sue, and the live-action feature of Carmen Sandiego.
Wayans Jr. was most recently seen in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and also stars in the Russo Brothers’ crime drama Cherry alongside Tom Holland. His upcoming credits include the romance comedy Long Weekend and the fantasy comedy Supercool.
Players centers on Chicago sportswriter Mack (Rodriguez), who has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with her best friend Adam (Wayans). But when she unexpectedly becomes infatuated with one of her targets (Ellis), they are forced to confront the idea of a true relationship.
The movie is being directed by Trish Sie (The Sleepover, Pitch Perfect 3) and written by Whit Anderson (Ozark, Daredevil).
Marc Platt and Ryan Christians will produce for Marc Platt Productions along with Ross Dinerstein for Campfire. Rodriguez and Molly Breeskin will executive produce through their I Can and I Will Productions company. Executive producers also include Ross Girard of Campfire and Dan Clarke.
