Written by McDowell and Justin Lader and based on a 2015 Vanity Fair article of the same name by Benjamin Wallace, the film follows the true-life tale of a Manhattan hedge fund magnate Thomas Gilbert Sr., who was murdered by his son Tommy — a brutal crime that shocked New York high society. Tommy recently received a 30 years-to-life in prison sentence for the crime.

XYZ Films is producing with Riva Marker and Gyllenhaal via their Nine Stories banner, Jeremy Steckler, and Conde Nast Entertainment, while Hunter Ryan and David Ryan are serving as executive producer.

Waltz is best known for his Oscar-winning performances in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, and will reprise his role as Bloefield in the upcoming James Bond film No Time to Die.
