Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Casts Christoph Waltz, Filming Begins in Early 2024

Christoph Waltz is joining the cast of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is expected to begin filming in early 2024.

In a recent interview with Collider, del Toro announced Waltz would play a role alongside Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth, and Oscar Isaac in his upcoming Frankenstein movie. Del Toro also confirmed the movie would go into production in February 2024.

“I’m doing Frankenstein,” del Toro said. “We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”

Waltz and del Toro previously collaborated on 2023’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, where Waltz voiced the character of Count Volpe. Waltz is also known for starring in 2009’s Inglorious Basterds, 2012’s Django Unchained, 2015’s Spectre, 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel, and 2021’s The French Dispatch.

Frankenstein is a passion project for Guillermo del Toro

Del Toro has been trying to adapt Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein into a movie for many years. In 2008, the Pan’s Labyrinth director signed a three-year deal with Universal with the intention of making a Frankenstein movie for the studio, though it never came to fruition. The project was revived for Netflix, as Deadline reported in March 2023 that del Toro was moving forward with the picture with Garfield, Isaac, and Goth.

Along with directing, del Toro is writing the screenplay for his Frankenstein remake and producing alongside Gary Ungar. Alexandre Desalt is providing the score.

A release date for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has not yet been set.
