Exclusive: Duncan Jones’ Journey to Moon

Back in January, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with Duncan Jones, the director of Moon, a highly-anticipated science fiction film that was premiering there. (You can read that original interview here.) At the time we spoke, the movie hadn’t even premiered yet, but since then, the movie has been picked up by Sony Classics, and it’s been playing just about every big film festival over the last few months – South by Southwest, the Tribeca and Seattle Film Festivals, as well as the upcoming Cinevegas. Duncan has been everywhere to answer questions and talk about the movie, the most exciting stop on the promotional tour being when NASA themselves asked to show the movie to their engineers, since the movie dealt with real scientific topics they have been researching themselves.

Somewhat of a throwback to classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Outland, it stars Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell, an astronaut stationed at a lunar mining station and coming to the end of his three-year term when he discovers he’s not alone up there.

ComingSoon.net finally had another chance to sit down with Duncan to talk about the movie a little more – this time we covered the score by Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream) and how they had Sam Rockwell playing many scenes opposite himself. We also talked about the amazing journey Duncan has been on since the film’s Sundance premiere. Once again, we covered a lot of ground, including what it felt like going against his former boss Tony Scott’s new movie, and we also talked about Duncan’s next sci-fi movie, currently called Mute, which he hopes to start shooting in Berlin, Germany very soon. This time, you actually get to see and hear him in his own words, as we’ve pulled out our handy-dandy Flip cam, this time using our newly-bought mini-tripod for those who’ve complained about our patented “shaky-cam.”

Moon opens in New York and L.A. on Friday, June 12 and rolls out to other cities in the weeks that follow. You can find out where it’s going to be playing on the official site.
