Captivating the King Episode 4 Recap: Why Did Jo Jung-Suk Lie About the King’s Last Words?

Starring Jo Jung-Suk and Shin Sae-Kyung, Captivating the King episode 4 aired on Sunday, January 28, 2024, on Netflix and tvN. The historical K-drama has currently taken an interesting turn, keeping viewers hooked on the show.

In episode 3, the queen’s nephew, Myung-Ha, warns Kang Hee-Soo not to disguise herself as male baduk player Mongwoo. He threatens to expose her in front of Lee In, which would bring shame to his father, the Chief State Councillor. As she decides to stop being Mongwoo, the royal guards capture her friend Hongjang and some innocent men, blaming them for treason. To stop the torture, Lee In begs his brother, the king, but the latter is brainwashed and draws swords against the prince.

The K-drama‘s episode 4 begins with Lee In trying to make the king understand that he is not a traitor. Suddenly, the king falls and vomits blood, followed by his death. Later, the prince lies to the officials that his brother mentioned in his last words that he should be the next king. Lee In believes that it is the best way to protect the throne from the queen’s greedy brother.

Captivating the King episode 4 spoilers: The king’s last words to Jo Jung-Suk was about his son ascending the throne

In Captivating the King episode 4, the King dies. While dying, he claims that he has been poisoned and that no one shall be trusted in the kingdom. The dying king wants Lee In (Jo Jung-Suk) to find the culprits. Moreover, he requests his younger brother to protect the throne for his son.

The king says, “See to it that the Prince Royal [his son] ascends to the throne.” After his death, his close officials warn him about the queen’s brother, Kim Jong-Bae, and his intention for the throne. To protect the late king’s wish, Lee In decides to accept the kingdom’s responsibility, which he has denied from the beginning. 

Jong-Bae doesn’t want to believe that the late king’s last words were for his younger brother. He asks Assistant Section Chief Yoo Hyun-Bo to force Mongwoo/Hee-Soo to confess that he and the other prisoners plotted against the late king with Lee In. When Myung-Ha forces her to lie to save herself, she denies it. Thus, Myung-Ha forges the confession. But things don’t go his way as Hyun-Bo backstabs him and marks Jong-Bae a traitor, leading to his execution.

Prince Lee In now becomes the new King. This brings hope for Shin Sae-Kyung’s character as she and Hongjang are still in prison. When the King summons them, he orders fatal punishment, leaving Mongwoo in shock. On the way to their punishment, Hongjang passes away, and Mongwoo flees by jumping into a river.

Captivating the King episode 4 ending: Shin Sae-Kyung returns to seek revenge on Jo Jung-Suk

After Shin Sae-Kyung’s character runs away, Captivating the King episode 4 fast-forwards to a few years. King Lee In (Jo Jung-Suk) is looking for a baduk player. Many professional players, including Mongwoo, have enrolled in the contest.

Disguised as a male player, Kang Hee-Soo returns, but this time, she is set to seek revenge. She blames King Lee In for Hongjang’s death and for not trusting her. Captivating the King episode 4 ends with Mongwoo entering the palace.
