TIFF Announces Its 2014 Midnight Madness, Vanguard Slates

The Midnight Madness and Vanguard slates at the Toronto International Film Festival were revealed this morning and they feature quite a crop of promising films. Per the official site, this program offers “The wild side: midnight screenings of the best in action, horror, shock and fantasy cinema.”

Kevin Smith’s Tusk leads the pack. The film stars Justin Long and Michael Parks and concerns a podcast who meets an eccentric old man who intends to turn him into a walrus. We spoke to Smith about the film at Comic-Con – read that interview here.

Also on the slate: REC 4: Apocalypse, the fourth film in the Spanish horror series. Directed by Jaume Balaguero, the film is set against the backdrop of a high-security quarantine facility in the bowels of an ocean liner. There, a ragtag group of survivors fights for their lives against infected zombie hordes.

It Follows is definitely one to see if you’re heading to the Toronto event. Director David Robert Mitchell’s story of an STD curse is one of the best things I’ve seen this year. Then there’s Adam Wingard’s The Guest, which has been making the festival rounds.

Cub concerns “A troupe of young Cub Scouts find themselves stalked by a psychopathic huntsman who has riddled the forest with ingenious and deadly traps.” And, MM also welcomes What We Do in the Shadows, the hilarious vampire faux documentary co-starring director Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement.

In the Vanguard arena, there’s Spring – the anticipated film from Resolution helmers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead – Shrew’s Nest and Over Your Dead Body from Takashi Miike. Get the full lowdown right here.
