Darin Scott, Jeffrey Combs Talk Dark House

Brittany Murphy project announced

Out of the many films previewed at the Los Angeles-based Weekend of Horrors expo, put on by Fangoria, ShockTillYouDrop.com was fortunate to get a quick glimpse of Darin Scott’s Dark House. The writer-director dropped in on the convention with cast, crew and an impressive teaser trailer featuring a myriad of ghouls.

“What we wanted to do was make a funhouse ride of horror,” Scott told the audience when asked about the film’s origins. Dark House marks his return to horror since 1995’s Tales from the Hood which he wrote and produced with director Rusty Cundieff. House was shot in nineteen days during the summer of 2008. “The story is about a massacre that took place in this house years ago where a bunch of children were killed by a very evil woman. Now, an entrepreneur who puts on haunted house attractions all over the country, he decides to exploit the history of the house by putting on a haunted attraction there. He hires a troupe of actors, one of whom, he doesn’t realize, was present at the massacre. She asked to come back to the house and perform. So they all come and get trapped in the house. The house uses a holographic illusion system to project monsters. They have hundreds of monsters that they can make look real. What happens is a ghost takes over the system and makes all of the monsters real threats. And they start taking people apart one by one.”

The cast suffering at the hands of these malevolent creations includes Meghan Ory, Danso Gordon, Bevin Prince, Shelly Cole, Matt Cohen, Erin Cummings and Jeffrey Combs, who made a surprise appearance at the Fango show to discuss how his role, Walston Rey, gave him some new material to chew on. “This movie really afforded me the chance to be the light note, he’s still a scoundrel, the typical double-talking producer,” Combs said, “the entrepreneur who’s the cheerleader. So, I’ve always got a smile on my face and just thinking about the spectacular amount of money I’m making putting this together until it turns very bad. And I get really pissed off. I got to play notes I don’t normally get to play. I’ve got a cane I twirl and just thinking I’m a dazzling personality. I had a great time playing this.”

Dark House will be released later this year (details forthcoming). Scott is currently up in Oregon where he is shooting an “erotic neo-noir giallo” entitled Something Wicked with Brittany Murphy.
