With the Bosch: Legacy spin-off, Ballard, concluding its debut season, fans are wondering what Robert Olivas did to the titular detective. The tense dynamics between the two characters were a focal point of the season, driving the narrative forward. So, what was the endgame for these rivals, and what prompted Ballard to grow so resentful of Olivas?
Here are all the details.

Here’s what Robert Olivas did to Renée Ballard
Renée Ballard filed a complaint against Robert Olivas because he tried to sexually assault her.
The fifth episode revealed the big picture and confirmed what had truly happened between Olivas and Ballard. Speaking with Zamara Parker, Renée shared how Olivas had tried to assault her during a party thrown to celebrate the promotion of their colleague. Olivas had slipped something in her drink that “really hit [her] hard.” As she went to the ladies’ room to splash some water on her face, Olivas followed her in and offered to take her home. When Ballard refused, Olivas’ “whole nice guy act just disappeared.”
Olivas then forced himself onto her, slamming her against the door. However, Ballard managed to hold her ground and fight him off. “He slammed me into the door. I fought him. And it wasn’t easy because he was dead set on getting what he wanted. But I finally got him off me, and I ran,” she recalled. Ballard also confirmed that she wasn’t Olivas’ first victim. He had previously harassed Parker as well and had unfortunately succeeded. As a result, Parker ended up leaving the force due to the trauma she endured.
Did Ballard kill Olivas in Season 1?
No, Renée did not kill Olivas.
Later in the show, it was revealed that Olivas had not only sexually harassed his female colleagues but was also working with the Zacatecas Nuevas cartel. The season finale saw titular lead and her Cold Case team blow the case wide open and expose Olivas’ criminal dealings. However, authorities soon dropped all charges against him in exchange for his testimony against other conspirators.
When Harry Bosch returned to deliver the bad news to Ballard, she wasted no time in giving Olivas a visit and even pulled a gun on him. Although the season ended with Ballard getting arrested for Olivas’ murder, it is clear that she was framed for it. The wait continues for Season 2, where fans will see Ballard’s fight against the cartel.
