Speaking to ScreenRant during the 2026 Italian Global Series event, Welliver said he is excited to see Michael Connelly’s television universe continue to expand. Alongside Ballard, the franchise is also growing with the upcoming prequel Start of Watch. Reflecting on the new series, the actor said working with Maggie Q has been “fun” and described the experience as different from the original Bosch because it “doesn’t have the same intensity.”
Welliver also settled one question fans had about his return. Bosch will appear in three episodes of Season 2, explaining that he steps in to “service the brand.” That matches his role in the first season, where the veteran detective appeared only occasionally while Ballard remained at the center of the investigation. His limited screen time suggests the creative team is committed to telling Renée Ballard’s story instead of turning the spinoff into another Bosch series.
Season 1 ended with Ballard facing serious trouble after becoming the prime suspect in Robert Olivas’ murder. Bosch helped uncover corruption inside the LAPD and revealed that Olivas had reached a deal that protected him from prosecution. Those events leave plenty of room for Bosch to assist again, even if his appearances remain brief.
The restrained approach also reflects Welliver’s busy schedule. He stars in The Westies, recently appeared in Dark Winds Season 4, and is involved with The Night Agent Season 4. Meanwhile, Ballard has earned strong praise of its own.
The first season holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the original Bosch remains one of Prime Video’s most successful crime dramas, building a loyal fan base over seven seasons before the franchise expanded.
