Directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan, Thug Life is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language gangster thriller film. It reunites two of the greats of Tamil and Indian cinema for the first time in 36 years as the director and main star. The plot is kept strictly under wraps but what is known is that Haasan portrays a criminal named Rangaraya Sakthivel Nayakar in the film. Is there a Thug Life release date?
Thug Life could arrive by 2025 at the earliest.
Thug Life was previously known as KH 234 (after its chronological number in Haasan’s filmography). This is the first time since 1987’s Nayakan that Haasan and Ratnam are collaborating on a project as the main star and director, respectively. They worked together in Ratnam’s 2022 and 2023 releases, Ponniyin Selvan: I and Ponniyin Selvan: II, as well but Haasan serves as the Tamil narrator in those and not the lead star.
In November 2023, the film’s title was officially announced and a short teaser trailer was released. In it, Haasan’s character, Rangaraya Sakthivel Nayakar, breaks the fourth wall and introduces himself as a criminal, before beating up a group of people. Haasan and Ratnam penned the script of the film, which they will produce through their banners Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) and Madras Talkies, respectively. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies is another production company attached to the production. Academy and Grammy-Award-winning A.R. Rahman will compose the music for the film.
If the production begins in early 2024, Thug Life is likely to come out in 2025 at the earliest, given the apparent scope and scale of the project.
