PlayerUnknown Leaves PUBG, Starts New Studio for Open-World Games

PUBG is an awkward acronym that stands for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, one of the first big battle royale titles. But now, PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, is leaving and starting his own independent studio.

This new studio will be called PlayerUnknown Productions and will be based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Although he is not entirely breaking away from Krafton, developer of PUBG, as the company will have a minority stake in the new team. Greene did give his thanks to Krafton for supporting him and the game over the past four years.

“I’m so very grateful to everyone at PUBG and Krafton for taking a chance on me and for the opportunities they afforded me over the past four years,” said Greene. “Today, I’m excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I’ve envisaged for years. Again, I’m thankful for everyone at Krafton for supporting my plans, and I’ll have more to reveal more about our project at a later date.”

Greene did not reveal what game the new team is making. However, the press release stated that the team is “exploring the systems needed to enable massive scale within open-world games.” It’s a bit of a vague descriptor, but could build off the foundation started in PUBG, given its huge map. Greene has not tweeted about the move, as his last tweet was on August 2, 2021 and simply said “brb” possibly hinting at this new studio.

PUBG popularized the battle royale genre after it was originally an ARMA 2 mod. He then went onto work on H1Z1 and the finally creating PUBG in 2017.
