Will Smith Won’t Return For The Suicide Squad
While the sequel to Suicide Squad may begin production before the end of the year, it won’t feature one of the stars of the first film. Variety is reporting that Will Smith has pulled out of The Suicide Squad, and he won’t reprise his role as Deadshot.
As noted by Variety, Smith’s return for the film had never been made official. However, Warner Bros. reportedly wanted both Smith and Margot Robbie to return for the sequel. The report goes on to note that Smith’s departure was amicable, and it ultimately came down to his busy schedule. It’s less clear if Deadshot will be recast for the movie, or if the character will simply sit out of this adventure. Earlier this year, there was also a report that suggested Robbie will skip this sequel as well.
Former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn will write and likely direct The Suicide Squad, which may act as a soft reboot for the franchise. Deadshot is one of the key characters on the comic book team. However, Deadshot made his debut as a Batman villain before joining the Suicide Squad. He was also featured in The Secret Six, and headlined a few solo adventures. Therefore, if Smith elects to return down the line, other alternatives exist for Deadshot.
Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021.
