2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Announced: ‘Birdman’ Leads the Way

The 2015 Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced this morning by Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and Eva Longoria and it was a bid day for Birdman, leading the way with four nominations, missing out only on a leading female actor nomination, a role the film doesn’t really have.

Following Birdman is Boyhood, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything with three nominations each and Benedict Cumberbatch is the actor of the hour, scoring nominations as part of the Imitation Game ensemble as well as a lead actor nomination and a nomination for his performance in “Sherlock“.

The most baffling nomination of the lot is the one for Naomi Watts, whose work in St. Vincent is hardly worthy of a nomination, serving as the only sore spot in a film that even those that liked it didn’t really like. The nomination for Robert Duvall in The Judge is a little bit of a surprise given the overall dislike for the film, but he and Robert Downey Jr. give good performances in that film and share one specific great moment, making the nomination easier to understand.

Otherwise, I like seeing Jake Gyllenhaal scoring a nomination for Nightcrawler as he and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) might be battling all season for the final nomination slot in the Best Actor category and the nomination for Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) certainly helps his chances for a film that seems to be slipping in the ranks.

The SAG committee also gave Jennifer Aniston a nomination for her Cake performance, a nomination that is looking more and more like a possibility at the Oscars. Then again, SAG was far more likely to go with either her or Hilary Swank (The Homesman) than they were for Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), which might end up the difference between SAG and the Oscars and we also don’t want to forget about Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year).

No nomination for Selma anywhere is rather baffling I have to say. I saw the film yesterday and it is definitely going to be a very strong contender for Best Picture and Best Actor (David Oyelowo) so it’s complete absence here is more than a little surprising. Word is the screen filmed late for the SAG voting committee but with the Golden Globe nominations coming tomorrow we’ll see if they too snub Ava DuVernay‘s film.

I have included the complete theatrical and primetime television nominations directly below. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will take place on January 25, 2015.
