Predictions went rather high when it comes to The Purge: Anarchy and last night the film took in $2.6 million from late night showings, but while Laremy predicted $36 million and the reader average was $30.4 million, I don’t see this thing going much higher than $26-27 million. I’m also curious how they spent $6 million more on this film than they did the first. What, just because of more locations? Has to be right?
This weekend Sex Tape also rolls into theaters with a $40 million budget and it only managed $1.1 million from Thursday night showings so will it be able to top $25 million? Eh, $20 million perhaps, but I’m not sure this one is going to have much traction. Laremy went with $26 million while the readers went a bit lower at $23M.
The family offering this weekend is Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue, which is carrying a $50 million price tag, same as the first, but that first one had a slightly inflated budget since it went from being a direct-to-video release to a full on theatrical release so they definitely spent a little more money on this one, chiefly, it looks to me, in the voice cast department. For this one the reader average came out at $22.8 million, just slightly higher than Laremy’s $21.6M. Tracking has it squarely in the middle at $22M.
Finally, the holdover from last weekend and it looks like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will easily repeat with the reader average coming in at $37.5 million, just slightly under Laremy’s $39 million prediction.
