Godzilla had a huge opening this weekend, bringing in an estimated $93 million domestically and another $103 million internationally so to learn Warner Bros. and Legendary have confirmed a sequel is already in the works should come as a surprise to anyone. Though, I’m sure, the sequel is just as much in the works today as it was last week, but WB is more than happy to say, “Yes, we’re doing it,” as the $160 million budgeted feature enjoyed the second highest domestic opening of 2014.
[amz asin=”1401250351″ size=”small”]As for what direction the sequel would go, director Gareth Edwards, says he has an idea where it might go, but isn’t telling yet. On the other hand, screenwriter Max Borenstein, who also wrote the graphic novel prequel “Godzilla: Awakening“, noted the Mothra tease in the film (the name is seen on an empty aquarium) and says, “I can’t say the Mothra Easter Egg is an indication of any specific plans for Mothra, though everyone has a fondness – I know I speak for Gareth, and I speak for Legendary – everyone has a great fondness for all the Toho characters.”
He then added:
“If we’re fortunate enough to make a sequel, then I think the choice of what character that might be, whether it’s a Toho character or a new one, it’s always going to have to be dictated by finding a way in to that character that feels of a piece with the tone we’re establishing. So you asked earlier if picking a grounded tone is why we didn’t have, Ghidorah or whatever? Not really, because I think there is a way to take any of those characters and put a fresh spin on them that might feel more of a piece tonally with our film than it would with maybe a campier, light-hearted version.”

Borenstein also mentioned Christopher Nolan‘s use of The Joker in The Dark Knight when determining the next character saying, “The same way Chris Nolan was so brilliantly able to create a Joker that felt of a piece in his dark and grounded reality… whereas if you just watched the television series from the ’60s, the Batman shows, you would have said that was impossible. I think it’s possible [to do the same thing with classic Godzilla characters].”
Of course, also feeding into the idea of Mothra’s inclusion in the sequel, there is talk of an end credits scene attached to screenings of Godzilla in select Asian countries in which “Mothra commands an army of fellow MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) and generates a hurricane with its wings.” Sounds like a lot of money to spend on one scene and only show it in select territories, but who knows.
Any preference for a character youd like to see in the sequel?
