Young Washington Sequel Is Already in Works Amid Record Box Office Debut

The sequel to Young Washington is already happening. Jon Erwin, the co-writer, director, and producer, announced the news amid the movie’s record-breaking success in its opening weekend at the box office.

How Young Washington became a box office hit and sparked plans for 1776

Erwin revealed in a social media post that 1776, the official follow-up to Young Washington, is in the works. The news came as Young Washington overperformed at the box office with a $20.8 million opening against a $15 million prediction. The movie now stands as Angel Studios’ biggest live-action opening ever (via Deadline).

In a clip shared on the official social media pages of Young Washington, distributor Angel Studios, and production company Wonder Project, Erwin stood inside George Washington’s former home of Mount Vernon, which has since become a museum dedicated to the first US President.

“I’m Jon, the creator of Young Washington, and I’m going to answer the number one question we’re getting about the movie right now,” Erwin said. “When people see it all over the nation, they love it. They cheer. We’ve shown it all over, and this one question keeps coming up: Are you going to make another movie?”

The filmmaker continued, “The answer is, yes. We are working on another one right now.” Erwin revealed that they had begun writing the sequel, “Another Revolutionary War epic on the year 1776.” He added, “If you think Young Washington is big, wait for 1776; it’s epic in every way. It’s another incredible chapter in this man’s life and legacy.”

Notably, Young Washington explores George Washington’s early life during the conflict between Great Britain and France in North America between 1753 and 1755. William Franklyn-Miller portrays Washington in the movie. Meanwhile, 1776 is one of the most pivotal years of the American Revolution. It is the year the Declaration of Independence was signed.

It’s unclear whether Franklyn-Miller will reprise his role in the movie. The release of Young Washington and the sequel announcement both took place as the US celebrates its 250th Independence Day.

1776 currently doesn’t have a release date.
