Tyler Perry Reunites Why Did I Get Married? Cast in Sequel Photos, Netflix Sets Release Date

Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry is returning to a familiar story with a fresh chapter on Netflix. New sequel photos also bring back key cast members alongside a notable new face. The reunion revives one of Perry’s best-known relationship dramas and sets up a new chapter built around old bonds, changing lives, and a major family event.

What to know about Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?

Tyler Perry‘s new sequel, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, follows the 2007 original and 2010’s Why Did I Get Married Too? It will debut on Netflix on September 9. Exclusive images shared with PEOPLE show returning cast members including Perry, Lamman Rucker, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White and Tasha Smith, while Taraji P. Henson joins the franchise as a fresh face.

The story is about the wedding of Marcus and Angela Williams’ daughter, played by White and Smith. Everyone comes together at Lake Como, where old friends reconnect, and the younger crowd brings a whole new energy.

Netflix says that even though they’ve all spent years apart, it doesn’t take long to see that some things never really change. As they watch their kids fall into a few of the same habits, they start thinking about the example they set and find themselves asking that same big question all over again.

Perry said bringing in younger characters created room for “the kids” to have their own arc and eventually see that “they’re not perfect and neither were their parents.” He also described reuniting the original cast as feeling like “putting on a warm robe.” For Perry, the sequel reflects both personal and on-screen growth, saying the cast has lived through marriages, divorces and long-term relationships since the first film.

He said he is most excited for viewers to see “how these characters have matured” and how love carried them through hard times. Perry added that the film is “a wonderful reminder” that marriage changes as people grow older.
