Universal Pictures has responded after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was leaked online during its theatrical run. The studio confirmed that it initiated immediate takedown measures after discovering the uploads, as pirated versions of the film spread across the internet. The incident comes at a time when The Odyssey continues to perform strongly at the global box office despite the leak.

Universal Pictures has acted quickly after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was leaked online, moving to remove unauthorized copies before they spread further. The studio confirmed that it launched immediate takedown efforts after discovering the uploads.
The largest leak reportedly appeared on X over the weekend, where a high-quality version of the film was viewed millions of times before it was removed and the account responsible was suspended. Addressing the incident, Universal said, “We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
Although most of the widely shared uploads had disappeared by Sunday, another lower-quality version surfaced on the platform later that morning. The Hollywood Reporter indicated that it remained online for around two hours before being taken down, by which point it had accumulated nearly 50,000 views.
The online leak also prompted an unusual reaction from fans. According to Deadline, some users began sharing links that appeared to contain the opening of The Odyssey, but instead redirected viewers to an extended compilation of Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up,” turning the search for pirated copies into a series of so-called “Rickrolls.”
Despite the unauthorized uploads, the leak does not appear to have affected the film’s commercial performance. The Odyssey has currently earned more than $652 million worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has collected approximately $289 million at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, international markets have contributed over $362 million to its global total.
