Hamilton has faced an unexpected box office setback. Released this past weekend, LD Entertainment’s Hadestown: The Musical has toppled Hamilton with some strong financial numbers. Initially, the movie was expected to gross around $9.69 million. However, strong word of mouth helped the 2026 Brett Sullivan-directed musical surpass the $10 million mark. Currently, the movie has earned $10.2 million from 1,949 theaters.

We are extending the run so audiences have even more time to catch up with this soul-stirring, iconic musical.”
The film is a recorded live performance of the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. With its opening weekend gross, it has now bagged the honor of having the top-grossing opening weekend for a live theater capture at the North American box office. Due to strong audience demand, Hadestown: The Musical has been extended beyond its initial 5-day run with added shows.
How much money did the Hamilton movie make at the box office?
Hamilton was also a major box office success. During its opening weekend, the film grossed an impressive $10.1 million. As of writing, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical had a domestic collection of $16,946,377 and earned $3,997,248 internationally.
Coming back to Hadestown, the Anais Mitchell production bagged as many as eight Tony Awards back in 2019. Continuing its streak of success, the production was also awarded the Best Musical Theater Album at the 2020 Grammys.
Hadestown: The Musical’s cast includes Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Andre De Shields (Hermes), Patrick Page (Hades), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), and Amber Gray (Persephone). The producers of the film are Lucinda Buckley, Francesca Danielle-Baker, Winny Herbert, and Miriam Nyarko as Swings. Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
Mitchell’s project explores two love stories, which are intertwined with one another. While the first one revolves around Eurydice and Orpheus, the other love story tells the tale of Persephone and her King, Hades.
