Tom Holland is swinging into Spider-Man: Brand New Day with a new suit featuring several upgrades. In a recent interview, the actor explained what sets this suit apart from the previous movie versions.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man suit design brings a new change to Brand New Day
In an interview with IMDb, Tom Holland said that the new Spider-Man suit has specially designed lenses that allow cameras to capture his own eyes under certain lighting conditions. “They had designed these new lenses, and in certain light, the camera looks straight through those lenses, and you can see my eyes underneath the mask,” he said.
He also revealed that there was some debate about whether it was a good idea, but director Destin Daniel Cretton embraced it. The actor said, “I think it was Destin that said, ‘I love being able to see that there is actually someone beneath that suit.'”
The new Spider-Man suit is a major redesign inspired by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iconic suits. Holland tried on the previous Spider-Man actors’ suits, as well as his own earlier suits, to help create a new design that combined elements from all of them.
Unlike Holland’s suit, Tobey and Andrew’s suits had zippers in different places, and they could remove the mask themselves, along with gloves, and use the restroom more easily. “For the fourth iteration of this character, it was the first time I could comfortably go to the bathroom,” he added.
The new costume also improves flexibility by removing the rigid textured material used on his earlier suits. He said the stretchier fabric makes it easier to move his jaw and deliver dialogue naturally with the mask on. “We did away with that 3D printing element. And it allowed me to be so much more flexible, and the suit was much stretchier. So it was definitely a comfier experience.”
Beyond all these improvements, Holland admitted that wearing a suit for longer periods can still be difficult. He said spending up to 12 hours in a suit often makes it uncomfortable, and said: “The worst thing is definitely the smell.”
Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see Spider-Man in action with the new suit when Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
