Gilmore Girls: The Series Blu-ray Review: 30-Disc Set Delivers

All 153 episodes of The Gilmore Girls are now available on Blu-ray for the first time. Given it was shot on 35mm film, this high-definition upgrade is meaningful and is a huge jump up from the prior DVD release. It’s the best the original series has ever looked, and even comes with the Netflix revival as well.

“In Stars Hollow, a charming, slightly off-center town known for green lawns, clapboard houses, and enough quirky characters to fill every hayride, parade, and picnic for miles, headstrong 32-y.o. Lorelai Gilmore carves out a comfortable, warm, caffeinated life for herself and her equally willful teen daughter, Rory. When Rory’s attention turns from dreams of private school and Harvard to boys and adolescent self-reliance, single mom Lorelai begins noticing more of her own rebellious youth in Rory,” says the official description.

With great performances from Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, and full of witty dialogue, Gilmore Girls is one of the most easily bingeable series. It’s a natural fit for a Blu-ray box set as a result, since you’ll want to keep these episodes on rotation and relive them. On top of including all seven original seasons, it also includes the Netflix revival, A Year in the Life.

As mentioned, Gilmore Girls was shot on film, so the HD masters look really great. There are some nitpicks, as the first three seasons are cropped to a widescreen aspect ratio rather than their native 4:3 aspect ratio. However, that is also how the show streams, and the quality is really strong. Audio is also lossless, allowing you to take in all of the witty dialogue without issue. It’s worth noting that there is one music change as John Lennon’s “Oh My Love” has been replaced in Season 1 with Steve Robinson’s “Love Is Real,” likely due to a licensing issue.

If there’s a complaint to be had about the Gilmore Girls: The Series Blu-ray set, it’s that the 30 discs are stuffed into two keepcases, which isn’t optimal. Otherwise, it features nearly all the existing DVD bonus features across its 30 discs (although a few Season 1 deleted scenes are missing). Highlights include an audio commentary for the Season 5 episode “You Jump, I Jump, Jack,” a nice celebration of its 100th episode, and a 21-minute BTS look at the first season.

Gilmore Girls: The Series Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

A definite upgrade from the prior DVD release, the Gilmore Girls: The Series Blu-ray earns an easy recommendation. It looks great, the changes are mostly minimal, and it is the best way to rewatch the show.
