Fans react to The Conjuring prequel’s new Ed and Lorraine casting

The latest casting announcement for The Conjuring: First Communion has sparked a divided response from fans, with many questioning the decision to recast younger versions of Ed Warren, played by Patrick Wilson, and Lorraine Warren, played by Vera Farmiga.

Although Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor received positive reactions after portraying the couple in the opening scene of The Conjuring: Last Rites, New Line Cinema has instead chosen Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix to lead the upcoming prequel. The new duo will take over as the franchise’s younger paranormal investigators.

Soon after the announcement, fans took to X to share their reactions. Some questioned why the studio chose not to bring back the actors introduced in Last Rites. One user wrote, “Why not use the 2 younger actors from the last movie..” Another asked, “Why didn’t they bring back the actors who played them in Last Rites’s opening scene?”

Few fans even focused on the casting of Lorraine Warren, with one fan posting, “They didn’t cast Taissa Farmiga? Girl…” Another commented, “Vera literally has a much younger actress sister that looks like her… What a fumble.”

One reaction even read, “Didn’t they said the last rites will be final flim of that universe, why they again restarting it.”

Despite the online debate, Wareing and Fix are now set to become the franchise’s new younger Ed and Lorraine Warren, taking over the roles previously portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Directed by Rodrigue Huart from a screenplay by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, The Conjuring: First Communion is expected to explore the Warrens’ early years.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 10, 2027.
