Netflix’s sci-fi Ray Gunn starring Scarlett Johansson finally receives a rating after a clash. The rating was announced within a month of a report by The Wrap stating that there was a back-and-forth in the camp. The report further revealed that “most parties are pushing for a less tactile PG” for the Brad Bird directorial.
What is Scarlett Johansson’s new sci-fi movie rated?
The Motion Picture Association has given Ray Gunn a PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) rating for violence, action, language, some suggestive material, and thematic elements. Alongside Johansson, the voice cast includes Sam Rockwell, John Ratzenberger, Tom Waits, Jamie Costa, among others.
Despite receiving the MPA rating, there’s still no clarity on whether Ray Gunn will be screened at theaters. The report by The Wrap also revealed Netflix is opting for a limited theatrical release for its untitled sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, helmed by David Fincher.
It had been brewing in Brad Bird’s mind for over three decades, and is said to be the filmmaker’s boldest play to break the limitations in the minds of the masses regarding animated films. Speaking about Ray Gunn to Netflix’s Tudum, Bird said, “It was always meant to be a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s. The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers. It’s a good popcorn movie.”

Johansson’s character, Venus Nova, is described as “the world’s most famous pop star whose scandals threaten to destroy her career — and may even cost her her life.” Renowned American singer-songwriter Tom Waits will voice Eyera, a one-eyed alien and Ray’s most trusted compatriot in the film.
The official synopsis of Ray Gunn reads, “In Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, private eye Raymond Gunn (Sam Rockwell) is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson).”
Ray Gunn will be available for streaming on Netflix from December 18, 2026.
