Michael Jackson’s Controversy-Filled Show Is a Streaming Hit Amid Michael’s Success

Netflix’s new documentary about Michael Jackson’s controversial case has become a major streaming success. This is in parallel with the film Michael, which is also experiencing a historic run at the global box office. The latter is set to release digitally this week.

Michael Jackson: The Verdict is doing well while Michael continues box office success

According to FlixPatrol’s report for June 7, 2026, Michael Jackson: The Verdict is leading the Netflix Top 10 Shows list. It premiered on the platform last week, on May 6, and has instantly climbed to the top spot.

The Top 10 list also features The Witness at #2, Tina Fey’s The Four Seasons at #3, Alfred Molina’s The Boroughs at #4, Nemesis at #5, and Taylor Sheridan’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves at 6.

Michael Jackson: The Verdict is a three-part Netflix documentary about the singer’s 2005 criminal trial in Santa Maria, California. There, he faced multiple counts of child molestation and was ultimately acquitted on all charges.

Because cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, the documentary examines the trial through interviews with people who were present. That includes prosecutors, defense attorneys, jury members, Jackson’s associates, and a couple of journalists.

Directed by Nick Green, Netflix’s Michael Jackson: The Verdict has also drawn a lot of criticism from viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 75% critics’ score, but an abysmal 7% user score. Similarly, on IMDb, over 4K users have given it a 4.5/10.

Meanwhile, the biographical film Michael is a massive commercial success. Made with a production budget of $155 million, it has grossed $888 million globally. It is the second highest-grossing musical biopic, just behind the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $911 million worldwide.

Antoine Fuqua helmed Michael with a screenplay by John Logan. Jaafar Jackson headlines the film, portraying The King of Pop. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 97% user rating and a critics’ score of 39%.

Michael will begin streaming on PVOD platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV starting Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
