Anthony Head has passed away. The British actor, best known for starring in TV shows such as Ted Lasso and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was 72.
Head’s daughters, Emily and Daisy, have confirmed that the actor “passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” per BBC News. They said in a statement, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father. It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”
The family further said they knew “how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the show he was in.” Head “loved his job very much” and “always considered himself incredibly lucky.”
Born in February 1954, Head’s professional acting career began in the late 1970s when he began landing roles in musicals, according to Deadline. It wasn’t long before he started starring in movies and TV as well, though it was his role as Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer that quickly introduced him to a new level of stardom.
Following the conclusion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 2003, Head starred in movies such as 2007’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, 2011’s The Iron Lady, 2013’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, 2016’s A Street Cat Named Bob, and more. He voiced Alfred Pennyworth in 2018’s Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.
Then, in 2020, Head played Rupert Mannion, the vindictive ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton, in Apple TV’s popular Ted Lasso show. He had appeared in all three seasons of Ted Lasso.
ComingSoon sends condolences to Anthony Head’s family and friends at this time.
