Indiana Jones & Harry Potter Star Michael Byrne Passes Away

Michael Byrne has passed away. The actor is best known for fighting Harrison Ford as Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and also playing Grindelwald in Harry Potter, among other roles.

Byrne died at the age of 82 on June 30, 2026, as reported by The Guardian. The actor is survived by his ex-wife Carole Nimmons, their daughters Tara and Bryony, and his grandchildren, Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine. The Guardian did not report a cause of death.

Born in November 1943, Byrne started his acting career in the 1960s at Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre. At the time, the actor’s theatre work included credits in shows such as Death and the Maiden at the Royal Court, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, and more. He followed that by appearing in several World War 2 films. These included The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, and more.

The actor played one of his most well-known roles as Colonel Vogel in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third installment in the franchise. A few years later, Byrne portrayed Smythe in 1994’s Braveheart, directed by Mel Gibson. Byrne continued to appear in notable franchises, including a turn in James Bond portraying Admiral Kelly in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Byrne later worked with Martin Scorsese in Gangs of New York, where he played Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the New-York Tribune. In 2010, Byrne entered the Harry Potter franchise by portraying the Dark Lord Gellert Grindelwald in a flashback sequence. Warner Bros. later expanded the role in multiple Harry Potter prequels. He also appeared in 2022’s British crime drama Strike, another project originating from Harry Potter’s creator.

Byrne followed that up with a recurring role as Ted Page in the British drama Coronation Street, which ran for 67 episodes between 2008 and 2010. His penultimate credited appearance was in the TV series The Archers, followed by playing Mr. Lucas in The Phoebus Files. The actor had registered over 170 credits across various works, which took over seven decades.
