The whole fiasco of Mariska Hargitay leaving SVU started with the character, Chief Tynan. She believes that Benson is too hands-on. Tynan argues that Benson should just supervise from the office and oversee multiple units, and not get deeply involved in every investigation.
The Chief has been trying to push this narrative for some time now, and this resulted in a heated confrontation between the two women. Benson pushes back and asks Tynan if this promotion is for the senior to keep an eye on her. However, Tynan claps back and claims, “So this unit can be led by a Captain who understands how to supervise.” (via NBC)
Soon, Benson is reminded of the chain of command and that Tynan is a superior officer. But she makes her stance clear on the promotion she’s been offered and expresses, “I’m not interested… So, Chief, I’ve been here for a very long time… I know how to do my job, and I would like very much for us to work together and do something good for this city. But you don’t need to tell me how to do my job; what you need to do is stay out of my way.” Tynan closed the scene with, “That is not how this works… Goodnight, Captain.”
