James Gunn says that Superman doesn’t need to make as much at the box office as some people are saying in order for it to be a hit.
Superman will finally be released in United States theaters this coming weekend from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter published last month, Superman is looking to make around $135 million during its opening weekend in the United States. Some are saying it could be lower and in the $90 million to $125 million range, while others estimate it could make as much as $175 million.
What did James Gunn say about Superman’s box office projections?
However the chips may fall for Superman’s box office, Gunn doesn’t seem too terribly worried about the matter.
He told GQ Magazine, “This is not the riskiest endeavor in the world. Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be. They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes 700 million or something, and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying.”
Superman will be the first film set in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, which kicked off last December with the animated Creature Commandos series. Peacemaker Season 2 then arrives in August 2025 before Supergirl hits theaters in June 2026.
The cast of Superman also includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and more.
Superman will be released in theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
