Wondering when Jake Lockett’s Sam Carver will return to Chicago Fire? After a difficult journey marked by personal struggles and time away from Firehouse 51, fans finally got an answer in the April 2, 2025 episode. Carver’s unexpected message to Violet Mikami confirmed that his long-awaited comeback is happening soon.
Here’s what we know about Carver’s recovery, his time away, and when he’s officially back on duty at Firehouse 51.
Will Jake Lockett’s Sam Carver return in Chicago Fire Season 13 and when?
Jake Lockett’s character Sam Carver will return to Chicago Fire in Season 13 Episode 18, airing on April 16, 2025. The April 2 episode (Season 13 Episode 17) confirmed his return when Violet Mikami received a text from Carver that read, “He’s coming back next shift.”
Carver has been absent from Firehouse 51 following a relapse in his struggle with alcohol abuse and the emotional fallout of his breakup with Violet. He initially attempted to manage his issues by attending AA meetings and working floater shifts at the CFD but found little relief. After speaking with Lieutenant Stella Kidd, Carver made the decision to take a furlough and enter rehab.
During his time away, Carver left Violet a note in her locker before departing to seek help. Since then, updates on his condition have been minimal, until the recent development in Episode 17. In a conversation between Violet and paramedic Lizzie Novak, Violet reveals, “Nothing, it’s Carver. He’s coming back next shift,” after reading Carver’s unexpected message.
Carver’s storyline throughout Season 13 has focused on his internal battles and efforts to find stability. “The tortured firefighter has been taking some much-needed time off, but he’s returning sooner than you think,” NBC confirmed in an April 2 summary. Carver’s appearance last occurred in Season 13 Episode 6, prior to his decision to step away from duty.
As of Episode 17, he has completed his time in rehab and informed his colleagues of his intent to return. His comeback will take place in Episode 18 on April 16, marking his reentry into active duty at Firehouse 51. Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and is available for streaming the next day on Peacock.
