Lionsgate’s new Ballerina movie is eyed to become a John Wick spinoff
Lionsgate has plans for a female-led actioner titled Ballerina that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is being considered for development within the John Wick universe. The Ballerina movie script arrives from up and coming screenwriter Shay Hatten. Hatten is best known for his screenplay Maximum King, which landed on last year’s Black List.
The Ballerina movie, which the trade likens to Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita, follows a young assassin who vows revenge against those that killed her family.
John Wick‘s Basil Iwanyk is set to produce the Ballerina movie through his Thunder Road.
The original John Wick, directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, hit theaters 2014 and found an immediate fanbase. A first sequel, John Wick: Chapter Two, hit theaters earlier this year. In it, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers. Also starring Common, Laurence Fishburne, Riccardo Scamarcio, Ruby Rose, Lance Reddick, Bridget Moynahan, Franco Nero, John Leguizamo, and Ian McShane, Chapter Two was helmed by Stahelski solo. Leitch, meanwhile, went off to direct this Friday’s big screen actioner Atomic Blonde. A third John Wick movie is in development as well.
