Robert Downey Jr. joins Spider-Man: Homecoming

Sony Pictures has officially announced that Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., is set to appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. The pair share some screen time in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and their relationship will be further expanded on in the 2017 film. Downey previously teased the possibility of him appearing in the film, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already confirmed that there is potential for other Marvel characters to appear in the film.

“It really is a homecoming,” leading man Tom Holland, who plays the webslinger, told the CinemaCon crowd during the film’s title announcement, “because, throughout the movie, Peter is trying to find out who he is and where he belongs in this world.”

The Spider-Man Homecoming cast is also set to include Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya as a character by the name of Michelle, with Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) set to play two of Peter’s other friends.

Homecoming is scripted by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and will be directed by Jon Watts. Production is set to begin on the film this summer in Atlanta with the film swinging into theaters and IMAX on July 7, 2017.
