Kung Fu Panda 3 tops box office a second weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens crosses $2 billion

For the second weekend in a row, DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3 topped the domestic box office with $21 million to push its total to $69 million. Released by 20th Century Fox, the third installment has earned $198.1 million globally so far. Kung Fu Panda 3 features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons and Kate Hudson.

Opening in second place was Universal Pictures’ Hail, Caesar! with an estimated $11.4 million from 2,232 theaters, an average of $5,125 per theater. Written and directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, the comedy cost $22 million to make and stars Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum. The film received a C- CinemaScore from audiences.

Coming in at No. 3 was Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter. The 20th Century Fox release added $7.1 million its seventh weekend in theaters for a total of $149.7 million. The drama cost about $135 million to make.

In fourth place, Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $6.9 million in domestic theaters this weekend for a record domestic total of $905.9 million after eight weeks. Internationally, the J.J. Abrams-directed blockbuster added $7 million to push its overseas total to $1.102 billion. That means the Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm sequel has now earned $2.008 billion worldwide. It is the #1 movie of all-time domestically, the #4 movie of all-time internationally, and the #3 movie of all-time worldwide, trailing Avatar‘s $2.788 billion and Titanic‘s $2.186 billion.

Rounding out the top five was the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Choice, directed by Ross Katz and starring Benjamin Walker, Teresa Palmer, Maggie Grace, Alexandra Daddario, Tom Welling, Brett Rice and Tom Wilkinson. The Lionsgate film debuted with $6 million from 2,631 theaters, an average of $2,313 per theater. The movie received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Newcomer Pride and Prejudice and Zombies opened in sixth place with $5.2 million from 2,931 theaters, an average of $1,774 per site. Costing about $28 million to make, the Burr Steers film stars Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance and Lena Headey. The film received a B- CinemaScore.
