Generation Kill Blu-ray Review: HBO Iraq War Show Is Still Riveting

Following David Simon’s legendary run on The Wire, he teamed up with Ed Burns and Evan Wright to adapt Wright’s Iraq war book Generation Kill for HBO. The seven-episode miniseries remains one of HBO’s best limited offerings, as it features a great cast headlined by Alexander Skarsgard and is a riveting watch from start to finish. The new Generation Kill Blu-ray release allows fans to own the stellar show in its entirety in high definition.

“A Marine chronicles his experiences during the first wave of the American-led assault on Baghdad in 2003,” says the official product description.

What makes Generation Kill such a great miniseries is how realistic it is. Wright was an embedded reporter with the US Marines during the war, which allows the series to put his real experiences on the screen. There’s no agenda here, and it’s not a piece of pure nationalism; it’s an honest and nuanced look at war. It winds up being a stellar watch that you’ll want to revisit again in the future.

Generation Kill had a grainy and gritty look to it when it aired, which is wonderfully preserved in its Blu-ray release. It looks even better than its original airing and allows for you to really appreciate Ivan Strasburg’s cinematography. The Blu-ray also features a stellar audio mix, as the DTS-HD 5.1 surround sound track feels incredible at times, especially during the action moments. You’ll really feel the thrill of the action as it unfolds.

There’s also a great mix of bonus content on the Generation Kill Blu-ray, as there are some strong audio commentaries that go over everything from the actual production to the journalism efforts that inspired it. There’s also over an hour of special features, including a conversation with six 1st Recon Marines who share their experiences of war and what stood out about the series’ retelling. There’s also a half-hour making-of documentary, plus video diaries from Eric Ladin. There’s a lot to enjoy here that will make you enjoy the series even more.

Generation Kill Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

Generation Kill is one of HBO’s best miniseries, and it’s only fitting that it received a great Blu-ray release. Fans will definitely want to pick this one up, as its meaningful bonus content and strong transfer make it an easy recommendation.
