Ben Stiller is coming back to Apple TV with a new comedy series. The show reunites Stiller with a frequent collaborator, following their Emmy nominations for the same project they worked on together previously. Further, a big Hollywood name is also expected to join the cast.
Oscar Award Winner joins Ben Stiller’s Apple TV comedy series
According to Variety, Oscar-winning actor Benicio del Toro is joining Apple TV‘s new comedy series, Protective Custody. This will be his first time in a lead role for a comedy series. Toro will be working with Ben Stiller again, after they collaborated on Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora. Stiller directed that show, while Toro starred in it, both earning Emmy nominations for their work.
Apple TV hasn’t shared who Benicio del Toro will be playing yet. Meanwhile, the show is about a financier who’s lost everything and is accused of huge fraud, played by Ben Stiller. While he waits for his trial, he’s put into protective custody and has to deal with life in prison. The character navigates prison politics, tries to fix his reputation, and deals with the fallout from his past choices.
Protective Custody mixes humor with the tough reality of life in prison. Toro is a highly regarded actor in Hollywood, winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Javier Rodriguez in the 2001 film Traffic. He was also nominated for Oscars for 21 Grams and One Battle After Another.

Mike Judge, Steve Hely, and Dave King wrote Protective Custody. They’re also executive producers and co-showrunners for the show. Judge will also be handling the direction.
Further, Stiller is executive producing through his company Red Hour, along with John Lesher. Ben Silverman, Howard Owens, Rodney Ferrell, Michael Rotenberg, Oly Obst, and Nanette Burstein are serving as producers.
Apple TV hasn’t announced the release date of Protective Custody.
