Lena Headey played Cersei Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones TV show. Her character was one of the primary antagonists, and during Season 5, Cersei was featured in a scene in which she had to march completely nude.
It was a humiliation ritual for her character, involving the crowd throwing stuff at her. When this specific episode aired, it was immediately revealed that Headey actually had a body double for the nude scene.
During a recent interview with The Telegraph, the actress discussed this scene at length and revealed that she was taken aback by fans’ negative reaction to her use of a body double. “I was really shocked by the anger, by this idea that I’d duped the audience. But by that point, everyone knew [the cast]; it was insane simply going anywhere, and I was with 3000 extras.”
Headey added, “Acting is a joy, but it requires a lot of you. I wouldn’t have been able to do the emotional part of the job; I’d have been in full-on defensive mode.”
Additionally, the actress discussed the immense popularity she experienced while on Game of Thrones. “Thrones was mega, and I don’t think anyone expected it,” she said while also admitting that she didn’t get overwhelmed with the unprecedented success because “it wasn’t my first job, so it didn’t make me nuts.”
Headey also presented a harsh reality about her career’s trajectory following Game of Thrones. It hasn’t really shaped the way it should have, as she’s “been knocking on doors for years now. Yes, the door opens, but it opens for a certain amount of time. If you don’t get in, you’re back to the bottom of the pile.”
As for her recent projects, Headey will be seen in the BBC’s upcoming audio drama, Intimacy. The eight-part podcast series also features other notable names, including Hannah Waddingham, Maisie Williams, and Alison Steadman. Intimacy will release on BBC Sounds on July 22, 2026.
