The Rookie fans will get a surprise release ahead of the Season 9 premiere. The ABC police drama will release extra footage before the new season premieres in 2027.
What is being released for The Rookie ahead of the Season 9 premiere?
As per Deadline, The Rookie will receive additional original content in Season 8. This will be an extended cut of Episode 10 from Season 8, “His Name Was Martin.”
This cut will come out on July 20 on Hulu and will be available in the Extras section of the series’ landing page. Moreover, this will include approximately 5.5 minutes of additional footage from the show.
The new footage will include action sequences in which the team tries to evade the zombie crew and scenes that provide more context for Lucy and Tim’s emotional conversation at the end of the episode. The episode was written and directed by the creator, Alexi Hawley, who also serves as the executive producer of the show.
The director also shared a statement explaining his decision for the extended cut, stating, “I knew I wanted to make something fun and scary and unexpectedly emotional. But tension takes time to play out on screen, and I found myself in the editing room with hard choices to make. I can count the number of scenes we’ve dropped in eight seasons on one hand (maybe two?), but I was up against a wall on this one.”

He continued, “Network run times are set in stone. But Hulu’s are not. So, I picked up the phone and pitched the idea of releasing an extended cut as a reward to our amazing fans, who are so invested in the show. Now they’ll be able to go deeper into the character journeys (especially for Tim and Lucy) and see the previously unaired scenes that enhance the episode in a unique way.”
In episode 10 of Season 8, John Nolan and the team try to contain a cleaning crew after they are exposed to a chemical. This makes them deranged and act almost zombie-like. However, when a crew member named Martin attacks Lucy, she shoots him in self-defense. This incident has a psychological and emotional impact on her.
The new season of the show will air on ABC in January 2027.
