Netflix has revealed the release date and first-look photos for Below
Below will release on Netflix on October 8, 2026. Its first-look photos feature various cast members and underscore the dread looming over the Canadian town. Jesse McKeown created the series and serves as its showrunner.
According to Netflix, the plot of Below revolves around Hartnett’s Calvin Penney, a “big-hearted but stubborn fisherman,” struggling to come to terms with his father’s unexplained death decades earlier. However, “when an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown,” Calvin joins forces with Fonda Howander (Davis), a visiting marine researcher, to protect his son Wade (Heaton) and their close-knit community.
As mentioned above, reports about the project first came out in January 2025 (via Deadline). At the time, it didn’t have a title, but Netflix revealed that it was a limited series with six episodes. It remains a limited series, per the latest update from the streamer.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hartnett explained what drew him to the project. “It tapped directly into a feeling I’ve been having, that I’m sure is not unique, that the powers that determine our lives are so far removed from us as people that it’s hard to even imagine being able to affect meaningful change for ourselves and the people we love,” the Oppenheimer star noted.
Hartnett further elaborated that “the ambiguous and terrifying powers become clear and our band of heroes are able to come together to fight them.” He added, “In that, there is a very satisfying level of wish fulfillment.”
Notably, Heaton has previously played Jonathan Byers in Netflix’s Stranger Things, while Davis portrayed various memorable characters in The F Word, The Martian, Blade Runner 2049, and Black Mirror. The cast also includes Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Willow Kean, and Rohan Campbell.
